Webster Avenue development pairs affordable and supportive

Common Ground’s five-year strategic plan identified the South Bronx as an area in serious need of - and with strong local support for - more affordable housing. The plan also identified increased affordable housing development as a way to prevent homelessness among at-risk populations and to foster good community relationships for future supportive housing projects.

Our newest project responds to this need with the goal of achieving these objectives.

In January 2014, Common Ground purchased 1974 Webster Avenue with financing provided by the Low Income Investment Fund and the NYC Acquisition Loan Fund. This property in the Bathgate/Tremont section of the Bronx will be the site of Common Ground’s next supportive and affordable housing development.

The project will be designed by COOKFOX Architects, which previously designed The Hegeman for Common Ground. Another previous partner, Mountco Construction and Development Corp., will be the general contractor as well as an equity partner in one of the two buildings. Common Ground will be the property manager for both buildings, drawing on extensive expertise in this area to support housing stability for the project’s residents.

Community buy-in for the project was evidenced when the local community board voted overwhelmingly to support the project. Our organization takes pride in each opportunity to connect industry-leading partners with communities in need of innovative housing solutions. We do all of this in pursuit of an end to homelessness in New York City.
