Join us for HOPE Count on January 25th!
NEW EVENT DATE: MONDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2016
Are you concerned about homelessness but not sure how to help? The HOPE Count is a great way to pitch in.
HOPE, which stands for Homeless Outreach Population Estimate, is an annual city-wide census of the individuals sleeping outdoors in New York City. Breaking Ground partners with the City to conduct the count of midtown Manhattan.
This is our biggest volunteer opportunity of the year, and recruitment is in full swing!
This year’s HOPE Count takes place on a cold winter night, from late Monday night to early Tuesday morning. This year’s event was scheduled for January 25th but has been postponed.
If you would like to consider joining us on the new date, please use the registration form below.
Many volunteers return year after year for an experience they describe as “rewarding” and “enlightening.” It’s truly a chance to connect with New York City and its inhabitants like never before.
Volunteers like you make this census possible, so please sign up today!
After you register, we’ll send you details about where to meet and what to expect. We’ll provide night-of training, pair you with experienced volunteers, and give you coffee, breakfast, and snacks.—>
We hope you’ll join us!
Frequently Asked Questions:
What is HOPE Count?
HOPE Count is an annual census of individuals sleeping outside, organized by New York City’s Department of Homeless Services and Breaking Ground. The data you and your fellow volunteers will gather during the event helps us adjust our efforts to make the greatest possible impact on helping the chronically homeless to improve their lives.
HOPE Count may take place on a chilly winter night, but it is ultimately a heart-warming experience. Our volunteers find it gratifying to be able to seek out and offer assistance to some of the city’s most vulnerable men and women, to be able to contribute in a tangible way to the fight to end homelessness. It’s a great way to meet like-minded individuals, and it’s even pretty fun.
What if I can’t participate in HOPE Count?
While HOPE Count is the once-a-year opportunity to witness Breaking Ground’s street outreach efforts up close and in person, it’s not the only way to get involved. We have year-round volunteer opportunities at many of our buildings and in our head office. And of course, we are always grateful for financial gifts, no matter how modest. We are a 501(c)(3) organization, and contributions are fully tax-deductible as allowed by law. Visit our Ways to Give page if you’d like to donate.
If I registered for the event before it was postponed, do I need to sign up again?
You do not need to complete the form again, but we do need to know that you’re available on the new date! Event manager Michelle LeNoach will be reaching out to each volunteer to confirm whether the new date still works for them. And thanks for volunteering!
