HOPE Count 2017 - NEW DATE!

HOPE Count 2017 will now take place on MONDAY, FEBRUARY 6th!

The date for HOPE Count 2017 has been changed to Monday, February 6th, 2017 (it was previously scheduled for January 23rd). If you have any questions or need to change your registration, please email us.

Registration for the Count is now closed for Breaking Ground’s area of Midtown Manhattan. The New York City Department of Homeless Services may still need your help in your neighborhood, however. You can find out more and register here.

HOPE (Homeless Outreach Population Estimate), is an annual city-wide census of the individuals sleeping outdoors in New York City. Breaking Ground partners with the NYC Department of Homeless Services to conduct the count in the midtown Manhattan area.

This is Breaking Ground’s biggest volunteer opportunity of the year. Many volunteers return year after year for an experience they describe as “rewarding” and “enlightening.” It’s truly a chance to connect with New York City and its inhabitants like never before.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is HOPE Count?
HOPE Count is an annual census of individuals sleeping outside, organized by New York City’s Department of Homeless Services and Breaking Ground. The data you and your fellow volunteers will gather during the event helps us adjust our street outreach efforts to make the greatest possible impact on helping the chronically homeless to improve their lives.

What are the details?
Volunteers arrive at 10:30pm for sign in, meeting your teams, and a comprehensive orientation. Refreshments are provided. At midnight, teams disperse to the streets with a Team Leader to conduct the count. Most teams finish between 2am and 3am. Have questions, or need more information before signing up? Send us an email.

Why participate?
HOPE Count may take place on a chilly night, but it is ultimately a heart-warming experience. Our volunteers find it gratifying to be able to seek out and offer assistance to some of the city’s most vulnerable men and women, to be able to contribute in a tangible way to the fight to end homelessness. It’s a great way to meet like-minded individuals, and it’s even pretty fun.

How do I sign up?
Registration is now closed for HOPE Count 2017, but we would love to welcome you as a volunteer throughout the year. Find out more about volunteer programs and fill out our interest form.
