Common Ground part of transformative development team for La Central in the Bronx

Common Ground is pleased to announce our selection to help construct and operate La Central – a new multi-property development that will bring affordable housing, retail, community and recreation space – including a YMCA – to the Bronxchester Urban Renewal site in the Melrose neighborhood of the Bronx.

On December 21, 2013, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that Common Ground will be part of a team that includes BRP Development Corporation, Hudson Companies Inc., and the YMCA to develop this project on the last large assemblage of City-owned vacant land in the South Bronx, all but completing a major urban renewal effort that has rebuilt and revitalized the once blighted community. The Bronxchester site includes five tax lots totaling approximately 184,500 square feet bordered by Bergen Avenue, Brook Avenue and East 149th Street. When complete, La Central will create a thriving mixed-income, mixed-use development consisting of five buildings with 985 units of affordable housing for low- to moderate-income New Yorkers.

Common Ground will be the majority owner of the General Partner and operator of one La Central building with 160 affordable units, 96 of which will be supportive housing for formerly homeless veterans and New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS. Comunilife will be the service provider and operate a community health and wellness clinic on the ground floor of the building.
