La Central: a shared vision for a revitalized South Bronx

Affordable housing is at the center of a massive development collaboration that will transform the city’s last large assemblage of vacant land in the South Bronx into a vibrant community hub. We’d like to show you the latest rendering of this exciting project.

In December 2013, the City of New York announced that the multi-property development known as La Central would bring 985 units of mixed-income affordable housing to the Bronxchester Urban Renewal site in the Melrose neighborhood of the Bronx. Bordered by Bergen Avenue, Brook Avenue and East 149th Street, La Central will encompass five new buildings of mixed-income affordable housing, along with a host of new retail, community and recreation spaces including a new YMCA.

We were pleased that Common Ground was selected to construct and operate the project’s supportive housing component. Here is the latest rendering of what the project will look like once completed.

Common Ground will be the developer, majority owner and operator of one La Central building with 160 affordable units, 96 of which will be supportive housing for formerly homeless veterans and New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS. Comunilife will be the service provider and operate a community health and wellness clinic on the ground floor of the building.

The remainder of the development will be managed by partners BRP Development Corporation, Hudson Companies Inc., The Kretchmer Companies, ELH Mgmt LLC, The Related Companies, and the YMCA of Greater New York.

Once complete, La Central will be a thriving mixed-income, mixed-use development and a true asset to a once blighted area of the South Bronx. FXFOWLE Architects and MHG Architects are the project’s designers and construction is expected to commence in mid-2015. Common Ground is proud to be a part of this important community revitalization.
